Tipping Etiquette Guide
Tipping is a social custom that varies by country and service type. In the US, it is a standard part of the service industry's compensation structure. Servicers often rely on tips to reach a living wage. Standard restaurant tipping is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill, while other services like salon visits, taxi rides, and food delivery generally see tips in the 10-20% range.
Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax
The standard rule of etiquette suggests calculating the tip based on the PRE-TAX subtotal. Tipping on the tax means you are giving the server a percentage of the money that goes to the government. However, for ease of calculation, many people simply tip on the final total, which results in a slightly generous tip for the server.
Tipping Around the World
Tipping culture is not universal. In Japan and South Korea, tipping can be considered rude. In much of Europe, a 'service charge' is often included, and leaving small change (rounding up) is sufficient. In Australia and New Zealand, tipping is appreciated but not expected. Always research local customs when traveling to avoid social faux pas.
